Lake Sentani is not far from the center of the capital of Papua Province, namely Jayapura, Indonesia. This lake holds a variety of impressive charm that will not be forgotten. The uniqueness of the natural beauty and culture of the Papuan people has its own identity, so this place must be included in your list of tourist destinations.

Lake Sentani is studded with 22 large and small islands. These islands have their own privileges and many of them have been opened as tourist attractions. No wonder this place has many islands, because the extent of it reaches 9,360 hectares.

One island that is quite popular is called Asei Island. Local people believe that the island is part of the dragon's body. In addition, they also believe that they are descended from ancestors who rode a dragon. While what is characteristic of this island is its handicraft in the form of bark paintings.

Lake Sentani gets its water supply from 34 springs from around the Cycloop Mountains. The large amount of water discharge and the area of the lake results in various types of biota that become inhabitants. At least, 15 types of aquatic plants were found in the form of authority, wood, apu, ribbon grass, water spinach, pepperetan, water taro, jukut, bakoan, fish grass, water moss, water hyacinth, water hyacinth, lotus, weed ducks, and blue-green algae.

In addition to aquatic plants, the lake is also inhabited by about 30 species of fresh fish. Even 4 of them are endemic to Lake Sentani. The species are sawfish (Pristis microdon), red rainbow fish (Glossolepis incisus), rainbow sentani fish (Chilatherina sentaniensis), and Lake Sentani cork fish (Oxyeleotris heterodon).

The name Lake Sentani is not necessarily given without deep meaning. This name is a description and hope for the people of Papua, especially residents around the lake. The name Sentani was given by a Christian Reverend BL Bin around 1898. The meaning itself is 'here we live in peace'. Therefore, Lake Sentani is expected to be a place that brings peace of life.

Performances that often seize the attention of tourists to come to Lake Sentani is a festival. Lake Sentani Festival is held every June 19 as a form of cultural preservation as well as showing the harmony and unity of local residents. Papua is indeed known as an area where conflicts between tribes occur quite often, so peace must be realized through the Lake Sentani festival.

The participants who took part in the festival consisted of all the groups in the Jayapura City and Regency areas. You will see shows that integrate Tabi's native culture, where the area has 16 sub-tribes and the best natural resources.
Sometimes in this festival there will also be sightings of crocodiles, but not always there. You can catch this moment if you're lucky.

Lake Sentani Festival begins with traditional dance that is practiced on a boat. After that it continues to the typical Papuan war dance. Then, a traditional ceremony to enthrone Ondoafi (native leader of Sentani). Then the last is to enjoy a variety of typical culinary offerings of Papua.
