Jaipong Dance, Traditional Dance From West Java Indonesia

Jaipong dance was born from the creativity of a Bandung-Indonesia artist named Gugum Gumbira who paid great attention to folk art such as the social dance of Ketuk Tilu. Gugum Gumbira is well acquainted with the patterns of traditional Ketuk Tilu dance movements, such as opening, picking, nibakeun, and other movements.

At the beginning of its appearance, the Jaipong Dance was called the Tap Tilu Development because this dance was indeed developed from the Ketuk Tilu dance.

The first Gugum Gumbira work known to the public was the Jaipong Dance "Daun Pulus Keser Bojong" and "Rendeng Bojong". From these two types of dances, there are names of famous Jaipong dancers such as Tati Saleh, Eli Somali, Yeti Mamat, and Pepen Dedi Kurniadi. Then in the 1980-1990s, Gugum Gumbira re-created other dances such as Toka-toka, Setra Sari, Sonteng, Pencug, and others. Again, reliable Jaipong dancers, such as Ine Dinar, Aa Suryabrata, Yumiati Mandiri, Asep Safaat, Iceu Effendi, and several other dancers.

It can be said, Jaipong Dance has become one of the icons of the beauty of West Java, and is often exhibited at important events to entertain guests from foreign countries who come to West Java. Also, when doing art missions overseas. Even though at the beginning of its appearance, this dance had become a warm conversation, especially because of its movements which were considered erotic and vulgar. But it actually made the Jaipong Dance get the attention of the media, including the broadcast of the Jaipong Dance in 1980 on TVRI Jakarta Central Station. Since then, Jaipong has become more popular and the frequency of performances has also increased.

The emergence of this type of dance also opened up business space for art activists who opened courses to learn Jaipong Dance. While the night entertainment entrepreneur utilizes Jaipong Dance to lure visitors to his place of business.
