The leader (Raja) in Bali at that time was Raja Dalem Waturenggong around the 16th century AD.

The history of Tanah Lot Bali Temple in Dwijendra Tatwa is explained once when Dang Hyang Nirartha returned to Rambut Siwi Temple on his way to the island of Bali, where he first arrived in Bali from Blambangan in Saka 1411 or 1489 AD, he had stopped at Rambut Temple Siwi this.

When he was in Rambut Siwi Temple for a while, then he continued his journey to the East (Purwa) and before leaving that place he took the time to conduct a "Surya Cewana" ceremony with the people around there.

After sprinkling holy water (tirtha) to the people who joined in the prayer then he left the temple and proceeded to continue his journey to the East, his journey through the southern coast of the island of Bali and was followed by several loyal followers.

In this holy journey Dang Hyang Nirartha really enjoyed and was amazed by the beauty of the southern coast of Bali with its natural beauty that was very interesting. He imagined how the greatness of Ida Sanghyang Widhi Wasa (God Almighty) had created the world and its contents for the lives of humans and other living things. In his heart he whispered that the duty of all living things in the world, especially humans, to thank and protect what He had created.

After a long journey, Dang Hyang Nirartha finally arrived and stopped at a beach with rocks and springs. The rock was called Gili Beo, "Gili" means small island and "Beo" means bird, so Gili Beo means island little bird-like one.

At that time in the village of Beraban, led by Bendesa Beraban Sakti, then in this place DangHyang Nirartha stopped and rested, not long after he rested came the fishermen who wanted to meet with him and bring some offerings to him.

After dusk they begged him to spend the night in their home, but their request was rejected by him and he preferred to spend the night on Gili Beo because in this place he could enjoy the fresh air with beautiful views and could take his eyes in all directions.

In the evening before he rested, he took the time to teach religion and morals to the people who came to him, but the presence of Dang Hyang Nirartha was not liked by Bendesa Beraban Sakti, because his teachings were not in accordance with and not in line with the teachings of Dang Hyang Nirartha and this made Bendesa Beraban Sakti angry and he invited his followers to drive DangHyang Nirartha from the area.

Then to protect himself from the Bendesa Beraban Sakti aggression, finally with supernatural power, then Gili Beo was moved to the middle of the sea and he created a snake from the shawl which he used to keep Gili Beo safe from evil attacks.

Then after that incident Gili Beo changed its name to Tanah Lot (Land in the sea), after seeing the miracle of DangHyang Nirartha finally Bendesa Beraban Sakti surrendered and then he became his loyal follower to continue teaching Hinduism to the community, and for his services it was Dang Hyang Nirartha give a kris to Bendesa Beraban Sakti.

Before he continued his sacred journey (Keris is an asymmetrical dagger typical of Indonesia which is used as a weapon and also a spiritual object, the dagger is often considered to have magical powers.
